SYMBOLISM
OF THE ARMORIAL BEARINGS OF
Sir Conrad Marshall J.F. SWAN, KCVO, PhD, FSA, FRHSCThe Badge at the upper left is that of York Herald of Arms comprising the White Rose of York en soleil; while that at upper right is the Badge of Rouge Dragon Pursuivant of Arms which features the Red Dragon of Wales. The Arms, left front, surrounded with a collar of S's (a reference to Sanctus Spiritus nothing to do with the SS!) which collar is worn by a herald in full uniform with tabard. This shield bears the herb, Jastrzębiec (Sparrow Hawk in English) of the Święcicki/Swan family – arms confirmed to Conrad's father and descendents by the Kings of Arms and recorded in the College of Arms. The other shield is matrimonial and bears Jastrzębiec impaling Northcote in reference to Conrad's marriage in 1957 to The Lady Hilda Northcote, younger daughter of henry, 3rd, Earl of Iddesleigh and 10th Baronet, and of Elizabeth (Lowndes) Countess of Iddesleigh, niece of Hilaire Belloc. The Crest is obviously inspired by the Herb. “Never Surrender” will be noted as the Motto.
