Symbolism Text: Arms
Red and white are the colours of Canada and represent Mr. Cowan’s life in Canada. The orle represents his life in New Zealand, black and white being the colours of that Country. The pattern conveys the idea of rotation, a reference to Mr. Cowan’s having lived and worked in many locations during his Canadian military service and airline employment.
Crest
The armoured arm represents Mr. Cowan’s military service with the Canadian Armed Forces while the Maori patu represents his personal and his family’s military service in New Zealand. The Loyalist military coronet honours Mr. Cowan’s descent from his United Empire Loyalist ancestor, Captain John Walden Meyers (1745-1821), who fought with the Loyalist Rangers during the American Revolutionary War.
Motto
The Latin phrase meaning "He who persists prevails" is based on the motto Qui Patitur Vincit, meaning "He who endures will conquer," of the Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship LEANDER and relates to Mr. Cowan's personal and his family's military service while living in New Zealand.
